Mahjong in Marin County
Come for the tiles. Stay for what happens around the table.
Mahjong has become one of my favorite ways to get moms out of the house, off our screens, and playing again. Somewhere between kids, work, marriage and the endless to-do list, a lot of us forgot how important that is.
And it turns out, mahjong has a lot to teach us about life. You can't control the hand you're dealt, only how you play it. You learn when to hold on, when to let go, how to pivot, and that sometimes the best thing you can do is stop trying so hard and enjoy the game.
So here's where to learn, play, and find your table in Marin.
This circle I found for mahjong has changed my mental load and my sense of lightness.— Alicia, MomShine

Common questions
How do I learn to play mahjong in Marin?
Several local options teach American Mah Jongg from scratch, including Marin Mahjong, San Anselmo Parks and Recreation, Marinwood CSD adult classes, and beginner courses in San Rafael. Most are beginner friendly and welcome total newcomers.
Do I need my own mahjong set or card?
Not to start. Most classes and groups have sets to use while you learn. Once you are playing regularly, many players pick up the current National Mah Jongg League card and their own set.
I am a total beginner. Is that okay?
Yes. Nearly every group here was built for beginners. You do not need a partner or any experience. You just need to show up.
How often do groups meet?
It varies. Some are weekly classes, some are drop-in meetups, and some are seasonal sessions through parks and rec. Check each listing for current dates and times.
