A chore chart only works when it matches what a kid can actually do. Here is how I split ours by age, and the exact charts we use each week.

Why age matters more than the chart

A 5 year old and a 13 year old are not doing the same jobs, and asking them to fails everyone. We tie completion to allowance: 85 percent of the week done earns the full amount, with room for extra “above and beyond” jobs.

The 5 year old chart

Short, visual, and mostly about routine: make the bed, brush teeth, feed the pet, put shoes away. Five or six jobs, no more.

The 10 year old chart

More independence: morning and evening jobs, homework done by a set time, a room reset each night.

The 13 year old chart

Real responsibility: pet care, laundry, dishes, and a weekly “family contribution” job that rotates.

Frequently asked

What age should chores start?

Around 3, with simple one-step tasks. By 5 a short written chart works well in our house.

Should chores be tied to allowance?

We do a hybrid. Baseline jobs are just expected, and an 85 percent week earns the full allowance.

How many chores is too many?

For little kids, five or six is plenty. I would rather they finish a short list than ignore a long one.

THE WEEKLY SHINE

Less noise. More joy.

Once a week I send a short, honest note: a book I couldn't put down, a show worth the hype, one idea I'm trying, and a reminder I probably needed myself. That's it.
